That\u2019s one of the reasons they\u2019re here: because, out in the wild, their survival depends on coordinated management. <\/p>\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group prose center reveal d1\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zoo al Maglio has been part of this program for years, and the Susy Fehr \u2013 ZooCARE Foundation is strengthening its role. <strong>EEP<\/strong> stands for <em>the European Endangered Species Program<\/em>: it is the European system coordinated by EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) that manages the populations of endangered species housed in European zoos.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to preserve genetic diversity, promote reproduction, and, in some cases, reintroduce animals into their natural habitat. When a zoo joins an EEP, every animal in its care becomes part of a larger story. It is not simply \u201cthe leopard at Zoo al Maglio\u201d; it is one of the few individuals of the species in Europe, managed according to scientific criteria shared with dozens of other zoos.  <\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-group imgband\">\n\t<div class=\"ib-bg\" data-parallax=\"\" data-parallax-speed=\"0.08\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large ib-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/exp-leopardo-3.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"ib-scrim\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-group ib-inner reveal\"><p class=\"pg-kicker wp-block-paragraph\">Shared Scientific Criteria<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Every individual counts in the European network<\/h2><\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-group pg pg--dark\">\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-group wrap\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group pg-head reveal\"><p class=\"pg-kicker wp-block-paragraph\">Preservation in Progress<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Current Programs<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven concrete commitments, managed in accordance with the shared criteria of the European Zoo Network.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group grid c2\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group fcard green reveal\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"fcard__letter\">1<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EEP Snow Leopard<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We participate in the European program for the conservation of the snow leopard (<em>Panthera uncia<\/em>), one of the rarest and most endangered species in the world. As members of the program, we contribute to the coordinated management of the European population: we follow the guidelines of the EEP coordinator and share data and decisions with the other zoos in the network. <\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group fcard green reveal d1\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"fcard__letter\">2<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EEP Ring-tailed Lemur<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We participate in the European conservation program for the ring-tailed lemur (<em>Lemur catta<\/em>), one of the world\u2019s most endangered species, which is endemic to Madagascar. Our work is focused on raising awareness about the species and the challenges it faces in Madagascar, while also helping to maintain a healthy <em>ex situ<\/em> population. <\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group fcard green reveal d2\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"fcard__letter\">3<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research on the Berber Lions<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We support research programs on the Barbary lion (<em>Panthera leo leo<\/em>), a subspecies that is extinct in the wild. Today, the Barbary lion survives only in zoos, and the coordinated management of these animals is essential to preserving what remains of their genetic heritage. <\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group fcard green reveal d3\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"fcard__letter\">4<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pro Specie Rara: Swiss Hens<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We participate in the Pro Specie Rara program to protect traditional Swiss chicken breeds, which are part of our region\u2019s agricultural and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group fcard green reveal\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"fcard__letter\">5<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring of Local Wildlife<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The zoo serves as an observation point for the region\u2019s wildlife, with a particular focus on the endangered amphibians of Ticino: controlled breeding and reproduction, a naturalized pond for reintroduction, and tools for monitoring wild species in the Malcantone region over time.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group fcard green reveal d1\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"fcard__letter\">6<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BOE Project<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conservation project by the Fondazione Susy Fehr \u2013 ZooCARE.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group fcard green reveal d2\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"fcard__letter\">7<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Burrowing Owl<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are participating in the European program for the burrowing owl (<em>Athene cunicularia<\/em>), the small bird of prey that lives underground in our park.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-group pg pg--white\">\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-group wrap\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group pg-head reveal\"><p class=\"pg-kicker wp-block-paragraph\">What We&#8217;ve Done<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Completed Projects<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Completed initiatives that have brought the issue of conservation beyond the zoo.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group split green reveal fx-int\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group split__media\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large split__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/an-lemure.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group split__body\"><p class=\"split__eyebrow wp-block-paragraph\">March\u2013April 2026<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mother Nature Project<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Stories of Women in Conservation.<\/em>  In the world of animal research, conservation, and protection, more and more women are making a decisive contribution to the preservation of nature: scientists, researchers, naturalists, and activists who work every day to protect endangered species and preserve ecosystems.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through *Mother Nature*, we\u2019ve shared these stories: women who, with passion and determination, have dedicated their lives to protecting animals and natural habitats, becoming examples of dedication, expertise, and courage.
