The species
Who they are
It is a bird of prey that lives underground: it occupies burrows dug by other animals, or digs its own, and unlike almost all other owls, it is active during the day as well. It is often seen perched at the entrance to its burrow, standing on its long legs, turning its head from side to side.
This species is associated with open grasslands, and for this very reason, it is affected by the conversion of its habitat to farmland.
