Who they are
Slow by definition, yet majestic in every movement. The sulcata tortoise is one of the most unexpected encounters at the zoo: many visitors are surprised by its size and the personality it displays.
It lives in the Sahel, where it survives by digging deep burrows to escape the heat. It is an endangered species: harvesting for the pet trade and the destruction of its habitat have greatly reduced its populations.
At the zoo, it shares its enclosure with the wallabies, and you can see it in the dedicatedAnimal Experience area.
